Co Aware
Carbon monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas which is formed during the incomplete combustion of carbon based fuels such as wood, house coal and smokeless fuels. Although it will always be present in the flue gases of a solid fuel appliance. You can take the following steps to avoid it leaking into your home:
- Have your chimney swept at least once a year to ensure the flue is clear and draws well, have the stove serviced or looked over by your chimney sweep to check for any breaks in seals and to smoke test the appliance and flue - see how often section for further information
- Ensure the room has an adequate air supply for the stove and that you are not burning it too low. starving a fire of oxygen will result in more carbon monoxide being produced. Generally speaking stoves over 5kw will require free air to the room or directly to the stove and even stoves under 5kw in modern well insulated houses will require free air
- Ensure you have a Co alarm fitted! Although this does not prevent Co entering your home as such, it will alert you and could save you and your families lives. Ensure the alarm is fitted between 1-3 meters away from the appliance and either high up on the wall or on the ceiling.
We carry Co alarms with us and will be happy to sell you one and install it free of charge. Alternatively if you would like to Provide your own we will also fit it free of charge during the sweep.
When buying a Co alarm check it complies to BS EN 50291:2001 or look for building regulations J approved on the pack
